Lad Lit Book Reviews: Favourite Genres

Lad-Lit Book Reviews
Chick-lit is a genre commonly associated with books about relationships, dating, and sex; written by women for women. But more recently the men have been having their own go at explaining the complex - and often quite funny - take on all of the above from the male perspective. This has been referred to as chick-lit for men, but is now starting to take form in it's own genre called lad-lit. As an author who writes about relationships from a man's point of view, I always find it quite fun to see how the guys tackle this popular subject!

Crime/Thriller Book Reviews (Fiction)
From the moment I picked up The Godfather by Mario Puzo, I have been hooked on crime stories. The crime/thriller genre is probably my favourite genre, because when done well it can keep you on the edge of your seat. I tried writing a crime novel myself years ago, but it was a bit of an epic fail so I don't think John Grisham and co have much to worry about!

True Crime Book Reviews (Non-Fiction)
One of the first books I ever read was Donnie Brasco which was the real-life account of FBI Agent Joseph D. Pistone's five-years spent undercover in the Gambino crime family. I was amazed of the strength of the man's character and the fact this really happened was always in the back of my mind. Since then I developed a bit of an obsession with factual books about the American Mafia and have read several books in the genre, and in recent years my book crush has switched to books about prisoners locked-up abroad.

Comedy/Funny Book Reviews
I gave stand-up comedy a go for 12-months, I have written a comedy novel, and I pretty much view Ricky Gervais as a God, so having a comedy section in my book reviews is a bit of a no brainer! In saying that, I also think real laugh-out loud funny books are far and few between (in my opinion, of course). Danny Wallace is a huge favourite of mine in this genre as he seems to effortlessly articulate on the page the true thought process of the male mind with hilarious accuracy. You can also find reader reviews of my novel The Drought in this section.

Horror/Supernatural Book Reviews
Horror is a genre I don't read often, and whenever I think of supernatural I can't help but think of Twilight (which I point blank refuse to read on the principle that a good old vampire story has been transformed into a romance!), but when I do pick odd book in this category, I thoroughly enjoy them. The Book With No Name/Bourbon Kid series is probably one of my favourite sets of books of all time!

Sports Book Reviews
The divide between sports stars and fans has perhaps never been wider. As more money gets pumped into sport, the interest in these athletes gets bigger. Footballers are now like rock stars, and while their celebrity lifestyle might appeal, their is still a craving for the everyday sports fan on the street to get an insight of what it really feels like to score that winning goal in a cup final. The majority of books in this section will be made up of autobiography's from football stars, but with the odd WWF/WWE wrestler thrown into the mix, as that was a huge part of my life in the 80s and 90s.

Autobiography/Other Book Reviews
Some books just don't into any specific categories, such as one of my favourite authors Ben Mezrich, who's work includes The Accidental Billionaires which was the inspiration for the Oscar-nominated movie The Social Network. Mezrich writes about factual events, but freely admits he expresses a certain amount of creative freedom to bring his stories to life. In a way, I have a created a section purely dedicated to Ben Mezrich books! So to balance things out a bit so it doesn't become a complete Mezrich love-in, I'll throw in the odd autobiography which doesn't happen to be sport or crime related!
